Congratulations, Jimi, on winning the International Blues Challenge Feb 4-6 2005, Memphis, USA . Jimi recently received the coveted Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society - Blues Performer of the Year Award for 2004. The following was copied from Jimi's website, www.jimihocking.com, shortly after he purchased his guitar. "This stunning 17" blonde archtop is my most recent aquisition, and hints at my direction as a guitarist. Named 'White Chocolate', she was hand built by John Liddy in Adelaide from the Bob Benedetto design. I really can't say enough good things about this guitar ... hand carved spruce top, flamed maple back and sides, ebony board, superbly fretted, with a floating Lindy Frailin pickup. I tried a number of Benedetto inspired guitars in New York, and came back to Australia seeking Liddy's work. I'm already saving for a custom 16" I have in mind for next year."

John Liddy’s mandolins are rapidly entering that space in bluegrass heaven reserved only for the very best. Having observed John’s craftsmanship for some years, in August 2005 I purchased an F-style mandolin that he had made in February 2005. It marked the beginning of a new range featuring red spruce (Adirondack) tops with cross-bracing. Mine is an outstanding instrument, with great projection and clarity and a rich rhythm ‘chop’ that is so important to a bluegrass ensemble. John has for many years made extremely fine archtop guitars, and his recent F-style mandolins meet the same very high standard – flawless workmanship and finish, a joy to play, with brilliant tone. In my opinion, John’s current batch of Liddy mandolins are among the finest of their style in Australia and very competitively priced compared to other ‘known’ brands. My advice to any serious mandolinist is to get in early, because Liddy mandolins are going to be the ones to watch in future years, especially once the US market discovers them.
‘Bluegrass Junction’ is one of Adelaide’s most well-known bluegrass bands. It features Trevor Warner on banjo and fiddle and Nick Cawthorne on guitar. [This testimonial was offered to John Liddy (he did not ask for it or pay for it) and John Bridgland purchased his Liddy mandolin (it was not given to him to endorse).]

I have enjoyed playing all of your Liddy guitars immensely.
Their finish is impeccable - a fine work of art. A joy to the eye as well as to the ear. As a player I find the build design very comfortable. Especially the neck radius which allows complete access to the finger board and would cater for any style of jazz playing. The tone is very even and allows the Contemporary, Mainstream sound that I love. I'm sure that these instruments will mature beautifully, especially if played often over some years. All the very best, Graham Cox

All is going very well with the guitar. It just keeps mellowing, and getting richer all the time, it really is a different instrument now. I recently played at the Dubbo Jazz Fest'. Chuck Morgan was there. He had a little trouble with his guitar and the airline, so I lent him my guitar, and sat back and listened to the set... WOW it really sounded beautiful, almost the same colour as the piano, and with Chuck playing it, it really allowed me to listen to the tone being produced by a truly great guitarist. I am so satisfied with the Opal. |

Oval sound hole guitar - custom made for Chuck Morgan |
Chuck Morgan has been a long time member of the Janet Seidel Band. He commissioned an oval sound hole guitar to replace the Howard Roberts model he was using. This guitar and Chuck's playing perfectly complement Janet's wonderful jazz voice. s been

Just a note to say that I am enjoying the guitar I purchased from you at the
Wangaratta Jazz Festival. It is a great instrument, I have been
playing it and neglecting all my other axes.
September 2005 - I am still playing my Opal ALL the time! It has mellowed wonderfully and has taught me so many new techniques, being such a subtle and responsive instrument. |

I have played many fine mandolins, including a 1923 Gibson F5 Lloyd Loar, and have also owned two Gibson F5s and a Gilchrist Model 5. My Liddy F5 Fern mandolin is exceptional and there are many occasions when for volume, clarity and tonal projection the Liddy F5 is my mandolin of choice over any of the others. |
